Posted November 19, 2010. I am always surprised at the seemingly high pressures some use on the street. I use my XR for DS only but use about 15 lbs everywhere. Have never had a problem and traction seems good all around. Just cannot imagine the feel of a knobby at 30lbs on the pavement. And the thought of a wet surface is scary.

The '96 400 I am currently riding was revalved/resprung by Pro-Action in '97 for enduro type riding,180# rider, still works great has needed only two sets of fork seals since. Several years ago, I had a professionaly built XR440 woods bike with suspension by Factory Connection, probably the best handling XR I ever owned.

The 400 had good suspension from Showa (fully adjustable shock; the forks had compression and rebound damping). It had a claimed 257 lb dry weight (117 kg), so it wasn't super-light, but it also wasn't as porky as the street-legal competition. The XR400R came with 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear, and single disc brakes front and rear.

The cases EX to XR cases are slightly different. But the EX cases can be installed in the XR frame with some engine mount modifications. The internal castings are the same. IE: crankshaft and tranny gears are interchangeable. The EX crank is longer on the left side to provide room for the starter gear. I have not noted the clutch differences.

The XR400 has been with us since 1996 and in that time Honda hasn't changed it - because it hasn't had to. Compared with the current gang of razor-thin, lightweight, firmly suspended, electric-start race bikes with lights, the kick-start XR feels fat, front-heavy and soft, but it's still a classic trail bike that appeals to a lot of riders.

turn up idle screw about 1 turn. Pull in decompressor/depress kill button/throttle wide open. full choke. kick 4-5 times (primes the engine) release. kick w/ no throttle. don't touch throttle. go to middle position on choke & let idle. after a minute turn off choke and turn down idle.
